Disabled people in Greece

PRESS RELEASE

The isolation of a person with a disability does not stem from the disability itself but from the social barriers and attitudes that surround it. This was the main conclusion of the first two-day conference of the Urban Non-Profit Company Rebirth, on the topic "Disability 360°: The path to socialization".

During the two-day conference, scientists, health professionals, athletes, educators and people with lived experience shared knowledge, suggestions and personal stories, shedding light on all aspects of disability and social inclusion. All speakers took a holistic approach to this major issue.

Through the audience's questions to the speakers and the discussion that followed among those present, the need to create and implement a protocol for the reintegration of people with disabilities into society emerged.

The two-day conference, which took place on the weekend of May 23 and 24 at the Conference Center of the University of Patras, was co-organized with the Equal Access Unit of the University of Patras, the Region of Western Greece, the "Hephaestus" Athletic Club, the Patras branch of the Panhellenic Women's Association "Kallipateira" and the Association of Friends of Clinical Rehabilitation "Demetrius and Vera Sfikas" of the Greek National University of Athens, while it was under the auspices of the University.

The event was honored with their presence and delivered a speech by the Deputy Regional Governor Mr. Charalambos Bonanos, the Deputy Regional Governor of Public Health Ms. Anna Mastorakou, the Vice-Rector for Student Affairs and Culture of the University of Patras Ms. Elena Albani and the Professor of Medicine Ms. Katerina Solomou. Rebirth warmly thanks all the speakers, the participants as well as the Region of Western Greece, the University of Patras, the Equal Access Unit, the catering company “Choriatiko” and the company kreosys for their support and assistance in organizing this two-day event.
